The basics
What Is a Balloon Backdrop?
A balloon backdrop combines a solid background with balloons, so the photo spot looks designed instead of like a bare wall.
Every balloon backdrop begins with a surface to shoot against. That might be a painted or printed board, sequins, silk flowers, faux boxwood or a length of fabric. Then a balloon garland goes over, around or across it. The surface gives you clean color behind everyone in the picture, and the balloons add shape, depth and personality. Put a neon sign, a vinyl name or marquee numbers in front and it becomes the centerpiece of the room.
Arches and backdrops are usually designed as a team: the arch or garland frames the scene and the backdrop fills it in. If you'd rather have balloons covering the entire surface with no panel showing, you're looking for a balloon wall.
Backdrop styles
Balloon Backdrop Styles
The shape of the backdrop sets the tone before the first balloon is even tied.
Round backdrops and balloon hoops
A round panel with a garland curving across one side is the backdrop we build most for birthdays and showers. The hoop is its open cousin: a metal ring wrapped partly in balloons and florals, often with a neon sign suspended inside. Hoops shine at weddings and engagement parties because the venue stays visible through the middle, whether that's exposed brick on the Westside or a garden lawn in Roswell.
Chiara (arched) backdrops
Chiara panels are tall boards with a rounded top. They stand alone or in groups of two or three at staggered heights, and they give a garland a graceful line to follow. Angle a second chiara beside the first and you get a two-wall setup that wraps around the cake table.
Square and panel backdrops
A square backdrop uses a rectangular frame or board, usually with the garland climbing one side and running along the top. A panel trio, three boards side by side in different heights or colors, creates a wide background for a long dessert spread.
Shimmer walls with balloons
Shimmer walls, also known as sequin walls, are grids of metallic squares that flutter and catch the light. Pair one with a garland in matching or contrasting shades and the backdrop glows in photos, especially after sunset on a rooftop or patio.
Flower, greenery and grass wall backdrops
Flower walls covered in silk roses and hydrangeas, greenery walls and boxwood-style grass walls all bring a softer garden feel. A balloon garland draped across a flower wall is a favorite for bridal showers, Mother's Day brunches and christenings.
Draped and curtain backdrops
Fabric drape and curtain backdrops suit weddings, galas and school events that need a broad, soft background, like a hotel ballroom in Buckhead or a high school cafeteria turned prom venue. String lights behind sheer fabric give evening parties a warm glow.
Balloon arch backdrops and photo booths
An arch backdrop sets a balloon arch in front of a solid board, or builds the arch right into it. It works as a photo booth backdrop as well: place a ring light or a booth in front and the design shows up in every frame.

The extras are what make the backdrop feel personal, and what guests remember when they scroll back through the photos.
Neon signs
Ready-made phrases for birthdays, showers and weddings, or a custom name sign made for your event.
Custom vinyl
A name, an age, a date or a monogram cut in your color and applied to the panel.
Marquee letters and numbers
Light-up letters and numbers, 3 to 4 feet tall, set in front of the backdrop and often wrapped in garland.
Pedestals and cake stands
Cylinders and plinths in front of the backdrop to hold the cake, cupcakes and gifts at different heights.
Balloon columns
Balloon columns on either side for a wider, grander scene.
Floor balloons and bubbles
Clusters and clear bubble balloons around the base to finish the picture.
Sizing
Balloon Backdrop Sizes: How Much Room You Need
Most backdrops are 6 to 8 feet wide. Save space in front for the table and whoever's holding the camera.
| Backdrop | Size | Floor space to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Single round or chiara panel | 6–7.5 ft tall | About 8 ft wide × 6 ft deep |
| Shimmer wall | 4×7 to 8×8 ft | The wall's width plus 2 ft per side for garland |
| Panel trio | About 8–10 ft wide | About 12 ft wide × 7 ft deep |
| 10×10 ft backdrop | 10 ft wide × 10 ft tall | About 12 ft wide; confirm the ceiling |
A 10×10 ft backdrop is ten feet across and ten feet high, so it needs about 11 ft of ceiling or more. That suits event halls, ballrooms, warehouse venues and outdoor setups better than most living rooms or finished basements.

Occasions
Balloon Backdrops for Graduations, Birthdays, Weddings and Holidays
The backdrop is usually where the main photos happen, so it's planned around the guest of honor.
- Graduation backdrops: school colors, the class year in marquee numbers and the grad's portrait on an easel. May is the busy stretch.
- Birthday backdrops: first birthdays and dol parties, 21st and 50th birthdays, kids' character themes and glam setups for grown-ups.
- Wedding, engagement and bridal shower backdrops: an ivory hoop with florals, a blush chiara trio or a rose-covered flower wall with a nude-toned garland.
- Gender reveal and sprinkle backdrops: neutral setups with a built-in reveal, or soft pastels for showers.
- Baptism and christening backdrops: white and ivory with florals and a hint of pale blue or pink.
- Homecoming and Greek-letter backdrops: HBCU homecoming tailgate and party setups, and chapter-color backdrops for probates and anniversaries.
- Holiday backdrops: winter wonderland and Christmas setups first, then Halloween, Valentine's, Easter, Mother's Day and Friendsgiving.
Planning
Tips for a Balloon Backdrop That Photographs Well
Where you put the backdrop matters more than which backdrop you pick.
- Keep it away from windows. Bright light from behind turns every face into a silhouette on a phone camera. A solid wall behind the backdrop works best.
- Light the front. A ring light or a soft lamp in front of the backdrop beats harsh overhead fixtures.
- Leave room. Allow 5 to 6 feet in front for the table, the guests and the person taking the picture.
- Check the ceiling. Measure before you choose a 7 ft chiara or a 10×10 ft backdrop, especially in basements and older intown homes.
- Outside, plan for wind and pollen. Backdrops catch wind like sails, and Atlanta's summer storms bring sudden gusts, so outdoor setups get weighted bases and go against a wall or fence in the shade. In spring pollen season, cover the backdrop until guests arrive.

Questions
Balloon Backdrops in Atlanta: FAQ
How much do balloon backdrops cost in Atlanta?
Backdrop rentals start at $85 for a panel and $135 for a shimmer wall. Styled backdrops with a balloon garland start at $375, and hoop or A-frame backdrops start at $495. Most fully styled setups come in between $375 and $800.
How much is a balloon arch with a backdrop?
Most of our arch-and-backdrop combinations run $450 to $800, based on the garland length, the backdrop surface and extras such as a neon sign or marquee numbers.
How big is a 10×10 ft backdrop?
It's ten feet wide and ten feet tall. Plan on about 12 feet of wall space and a ceiling of around 11 feet, which is why it suits halls and ballrooms better than most homes.
How many balloons does a balloon hoop take?
For a 6–7 ft hoop with garland on a third to half of the ring, figure roughly 60 to 120 balloons of mixed sizes. Covering the full circle takes more.
Can I rent a backdrop without balloons?
Yes. Shimmer walls, flower walls, grass walls and panel backdrops all rent on their own, and balloons can be added later.
Where should a balloon backdrop go?
Against a solid wall, away from windows, with 5 to 6 feet of open floor in front for a table and photos. Outside, keep it shaded and backed by a wall or fence to block the wind.
What can I use instead of a backdrop?
Try a full balloon wall, a big arch set against a blank wall, some fabric drape, or a garland framing a doorway. Any of those creates a photo spot with no backdrop board needed.
Can you put a name or neon sign on the backdrop?
Yes. Names, ages and dates go on the panel in custom vinyl, and a neon sign can hang on the backdrop or inside a balloon hoop.
