The basics

Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars Explained

Columns, towers, pillars and posts are all one idea: balloons stacked up a pole that's anchored in a weighted base.

Because a column stands by itself, usually somewhere between 5 and 8 feet tall, it goes nearly anywhere: both sides of a front door, either end of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or beside a trade show booth. It's the most flexible piece of balloon decor we build and the simplest way to add height without hanging a thing.

Columns are also the budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and if you decide you want the arch after all, we can join the two tops with a garland, the classic "columns and arch" look for school dances, church anniversaries and store openings.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

The pole and base never change. The pattern built around them is what does.

Classic stacked columns

Groups of four balloons stacked snugly up the pole in a single color or in stripes of color. Bold, neat and the least expensive column we make.

Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)

Shift the colors in each group and they wind up the column like a barber pole. Two colors look crisp and simple. Three colors, such as red, white and blue for the 4th of July or a team's colors for a watch party, are what people ask for most. Four colors work for rainbow themes and some school palettes.

Organic balloon columns

Mixed balloon sizes in relaxed clusters give a column a soft, full shape that matches an organic arch or garland. They use more balloons than classic columns, so they cost more, and they're the modern pick for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

Columns can turn into characters and objects too: a crayon for back-to-school, a palm tree for a luau, a stoplight for a race-car party, a peach for a Georgia-themed shower, or a candy cane at Christmas. They're a fun way to dress a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is what ties a column to your particular event.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary year or a class year. It's the column style we're asked for most.
  • Stars, hearts and crowns: foil shapes for graduations, Valentine's Day, sweet 16s and quinceañeras.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble filled with confetti or feathers, or printed with a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: for graduation parties, senior nights and commencement receptions.
  • Logo or letter panels: for corporate events, chapter events and store openings.

Sizing

Balloon Column Heights and Balloon Counts

A standard column is roughly 6 feet tall before you add the topper.

Column heights with typical balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral column5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

These counts cover the column itself. The topper, the base and any clusters at the foot add a few more.

What size balloons make a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in groups of four, which makes a column about 18 to 20 inches wide. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Atlanta?

A single column usually runs $85 to $275, depending on the style and the topper.

Balloon column starting prices
ColumnStarting at
Mini tabletop column$55
Classic column$85
Spiral column (2–4 colors)$105
Themed column (graduation, holiday)$145
Organic column$165
Balloon tower with number or star topper$185

Prices are per column, delivered and set in place within our core Metro Atlanta service area.

What do two balloon columns cost? Most entrances take a pair, so budget roughly $170 to $550 for two, depending on the style. A pair is priced better than two singles, and adding an arch across the top costs less than ordering the pieces separately.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns look their best in twos, framing something between them.

Entrances

On each side of a front door, a venue entry or a storefront, so nobody has to ask where the party is.

Stages and DJ booths

Set at both ends of a stage or DJ table, they frame speakers, performers and the DJ in every shot.

Wedding aisles

Short columns lining the aisle, or a tall pair where the couple will stand.

Dance floors

At the four corners of the floor, sometimes linked overhead with a garland canopy.

Trade show booths

Columns in brand colors make a booth easy to spot from far down a convention hall aisle downtown.

Gyms and church halls

Rows of columns in school or church colors for graduations, prom, homecoming and anniversary banquets, from Cobb and Gwinnett school gyms to fellowship halls in South Fulton.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays

May graduation season keeps us busiest with columns, but they fit almost any Atlanta event.

  • Graduation: school-color towers topped with a cap, a star or the year, for backyard grad parties, prom, senior night and commencement receptions from Kennesaw State to the Atlanta University Center.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: organic columns in blush, or in white with gold, standing at the altar and again at the reception door.
  • Birthdays: a birthday column with the age on top, from a first birthday to a 70th.
  • Gender reveals: pink and blue columns crowned with a question-mark topper.
  • Corporate events and trade shows: columns in brand colors for booths, lobbies and openings.
  • Holidays: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, Juneteenth and red-white-and-blue columns for the 4th of July.
  • Quinceañeras and sweet 16s: a pair of columns framing the court's grand entrance.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in Atlanta Weather

Columns are tall and top-heavy, so the ones that go outside are built a little differently.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases, and we tie them off to a railing, post or fence whenever one is close by, since summer storm gusts tend to arrive with little warning.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outdoors by a wide margin.
  • Shade makes the difference: direct sun and Georgia heat fade and pop latex within a few hours, and dark colors heat up first.
  • For storefronts on busy, breezy corridors like Peachtree, we place columns where the building blocks the wind.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Several days inside. A few hours in direct summer sun.

Air-filled and indoors with the air conditioning on, a balloon column lasts several days and often a week. In outdoor shade it holds about a day, and in direct summer sun it starts to fade and pop within a few hours. Indoor columns can be built a day or two early, which helps with morning graduation ceremonies and school events where the building opens before we could get there.

Questions

Balloon Columns in Atlanta: FAQ

How much do people charge for balloon columns?

Our classic columns start at $85 each, spiral columns at $105, organic columns at $165 and towers with toppers at $185. Most entrances use a pair.

How many balloons go into a balloon column?

A classic column of 11-inch balloons takes about 40 to 60 at 5–6 ft tall and 60 to 80 at 7–8 ft. Organic columns mix sizes and usually need 60 to 100 or more.

What size balloons are used for a balloon column?

Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons grouped in fours. Organic columns mix 5-inch, 11-inch and 16–18-inch balloons.

How long will balloon columns last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, around a day outside in shade, and a few hours in direct Atlanta summer sun.

How far in advance can a balloon column be made?

A day or two ahead for indoor events. Columns for outdoor summer events should be set up the same day.

Balloon column, balloon tower, balloon pillar: what's the difference?

Not really. All three names describe a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base. People tend to say "tower" when the column has a big topper.

Can balloon columns have a number on top?

Yes, and it's our most requested topper. A jumbo 34- or 40-inch foil number shows off an age, an anniversary or a grad's class year.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are filled with air and held up by the pole and weighted base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.

What is an organic balloon column?

It's a column built from mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters rather than even stacked rings, so it looks fuller and softer, just like an organic arch.
